Videos point the way to successful revegetation

Do you know what it takes for a successful revegetation project?

The North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) revegetation video series is now available at Revegetation video series (necma.vic.gov.au).

The revegetation video series is part of the Bush for Birds project, a landscape-scale project that aims to help landowners create and improve habitat for the critically endangered Regent honeyeater and Swift parrot in north-eastern Victoria.

Revegetation is critical to support these birds and other threatened species to thrive. The series walks through the steps for a successful revegetation project, from planning, site preparation, and planting, to enhancing farm dams to improve biodiversity values in your site.

Video 1 is the Introduction to see what the Revegetation Video series is all about.

In Video 2 – Planning – you will learn more about how to plan your revegetation project and get the best outcomes.

“Whether you have a large or small project, good planning is key to success. Proper planning ensures you will get the best results, and you will also save time and money,” said Phillip Falcke, Senior Project Officer with North East CMA.

Video 3 – Fencing – discusses the importance of creating exclusion zones and wildlife-friendly fencing, and it will give you some insights on fencing options that best suit your project.

The fourth video of the series, Video 4 – Site Preparation – builds a case for preparing your site. Adequate weed control and soil preparation will increase the success of your revegetation efforts and reduce the maintenance requirements in future.

“A well-prepared site will provide the best conditions for your revegetation effort. This means getting in and doing your weed control early and choosing the type of soil preparation that best suits your site,” Mr Falcke said.

Planting is the next step after planning your project, fencing, and preparing your site. In Video 5 – Planting – you will learn more about planting techniques and tips to improve seedlings’ survival. But having the plants in the ground is not the end.

Video 6 – Tree Guards – discusses guarding options and what to consider when choosing the best one available for your revegetation project. Tree guards protect your plants against winds, cold temperatures, and grazing.

And if you’d like to take it one step further, enhancing farm dams is a great way to improve biodiversity on farms. The final video of the series, Video 7 – Farm Dams – talks about enhanced farm dams and how they can add value to your site and revegetation project.

The video series was developed to inspire and support landholders to start their own revegetation projects. If you have further inquiries or want to discuss revegetation opportunities, please contact the North East CMA.

The Bush for Birds project is supported by the North East Catchment Management Authority through funding from the Australian Government.
