Sustainable Irrigation

The North East Sustainable Irrigation Plan sets the strategic direction and identifies activities to ensure sustainable irrigation in the region now and into the future.

North East CMA partnered with Goulburn Broken and North Central CMAs, Agriculture Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) to support the Regulated Diversions Catchments Land and Water Use Mapping project that included the large-scale spatial capture of land and water use data of regulated diverters within northern Victoria for the 2022-23 irrigation season.

Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitators (RALFs) are working to build the future of sustainable agriculture in Australia. They are out in the community assisting stakeholders and are the key contacts for landcarers to learn about sustainable agriculture.

This project seeks to promote soil health in North East Victoria by addressing soil acidification and hillslope erosion. This project is supported by the North East Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. The project runs until June 2023.

Irrigated agriculture accounts for around 70 per cent of the water use in Victoria and generates substantial economic, social and regional benefits. The Northern Victoria irrigation Development guidelines were first developed in 2007, and this second edition brings them in to line with a range of new legislative and procedural areas.
